Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba: Designated Nature Reserves under Management of FPNA

ORANJESTAD, ARUBA – With the creation of Parke Nacional Arikok on 24 August 2000, the first nature reserve of Aruba was formalized, and several years later  the newly founded Fundacion Parke Nacional Arikok (FPNA, later amended to Fundacion Parke Nacional Aruba) was appointed as the official conservation management organization. On September 13, 2012, Aruba Birdlife Conservation (ABC) – the driving force behind the granting of new nature reserves – handed in a petition to protect 16 additional areas in Aruba, with FPNA as as managing organization. On February 6th, 2013, the Parliament of Aruba unanimously passed the motion to effectively protect these 16 territories and  to bring them under the management of FPNA.

In 2017, three of these sixteen terrestrial areas were designated as nature reserves, namely Spaans Lagoen (a Ramsar area), along with part of the watershed area, Rooi Bringamosa and Rooi Taki – with FPNA as management organization. In 2018, Parke Marino was realized and in 2019 it was brought under the management of FPNA .

It is with great pleasure that FPNA was recently appointed as administrator of the 2020 designated nature reserves: Dunes California, Arashi, Salina Tierra del Sol (Important Bird Area / IBA), Salina Malmok/Salina Serca, Salina Palm Beach, Bubaliplas (IBA), Sero Teishi, Rooi Manonchi, various coastal and mangrove areas,  reef islands, Rooi Lamunchi, and Sero Colorado. These nature reserves contain important ecosystems and habitats – such as vulnerable dune areas with characteristic vegetation, hilly landscape, watershedand drainage areas – and are the habitat of many often vulnerable, endangered, and/or endemic species such as terns, burrowing owls, parakeets, bats, cotton-tailed rabbits, frogs and numerous insects such as butterflies and other pollinators. With the allocation of these additional terrestrial areas, it is estimated that more than 20% of the island has been destined as a nature reserve, and the Aruban community is assured of the protection of these sites and the flora and fauna for future generations.

FPNA is exceedingly pleased with these new nature reserves, which make an important contribution to the further protection of the unique Aruban nature. The foundation will be busy in the coming months with taking up the new responsibilities and drawing up management plans.

FPNA would like to express her great appreciation for the enormous passion and dedication of ABC in the realizing the new nature reserves. FPNA further congratulates the Aruban government and community, which clearly indicate the increasing value that is being given to nature conservation as part of the realization of a sustainable Future for us all.
